The American Sokol Organization (ASO) was founded in 1865 by Czech Americans in Saint Louis, Missouri, three years after the Sokol organization was originally established in Bohemia, then part of the Austrian Empire. It endeavors to teach sportsmanship through competitions, particularly in gymnastics. The organization also sponsors folk dancing, language classes, schools, camps, and other cultural activities.
