Collection donated to the IHRC by Raimunds Caks in 1981. It was processed by Astra Apsitis who also compiled an inventory to the collection that was published by the IHRC in 1994. The publication was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access. In 2005, the inventory was included in the IHRC Collections Database, prepared for encoding and made available on the IHRC website by DaN.
Raimunds Caks was born in Latvia’s Saikava region in 1915, later moving to Riga where he served, among other activities, as the Latvian Scouting headquarters’ secretary. Caks left Latvia during World War II and lived in displaced persons camps in the French Zone of Occupied Germany. While in Germany, he continued his involvement in scouting as the Baltic Scouting representative for the French Zone and editor of the publication Trimda (Exile) Caks immigrated to the United States and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he remained actively involved in Latvian scouting and journalism. He wrote many articles about scouting and scouting activities for Latvian publications. Caks was the editor of Daugavas Vanagu Menesraksts (a monthly publication of the national Latvian Social Welfare group, Daugavas Vanagi) from 1964-1974, and again after 1977. Caks also wrote articles and editorials as a correspondent for the Latvian newspaper Laiks.
The Raimunds Caks collection is comprised of personal papers that reflect his participation in a number of Latvian civic and cultural activities and organizations since settling in the United States after World War II. The folders include correspondence, bulletins, announcements, invitations, and reports. Though Caks is noted for his activity with Latvian scouting and journalism, this collection contains primarily documentation of his involvement with the Daugavas Vanagi, thus providing insight to the organization’s activities throughout the United States and internationally.
