Abstract: Collection consists of materials (correspondence, reports, articles, conference booklets, etc.) pertaining to the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America; Displaced Persons; World Congress of Free Ukrainians; Shevchenko Centennial; Ukrainians in Brazil; congressional leaders; the Ukrainian American newspaper "Ameryka" and periodical "Ukrainian Bulletin; Ukrainian Catholic Church in Philadelphia; and the publication "The Ukrainian Heritage." Included are also photographs.

PROVENANCE

Collection acquired from Mark Dushnyck of New York in 2003. It was initially processed and described by Halyna Myroniuk in 2009.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Walter Dushnyck was born in 1908 in the village of Zastavtsi, Pidhatski County, Galicia. He came to America in the early 1930s settling in New York City. He had a long career as a journalist and was a community activist. Dushnyck was editor of the journals "Natsionalist" and "Visnyk ODWU" and co-editor of the newspapers "Svoboda" and "The Ukrainian Weekly." In addition, he edited the periodical publications of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, "The Ukrainian Quarterly" and "Ukrainian Bulletin." Dushnyck prepared and published nine English translations of works on Ukraine. His writings include "Death and Devastation on the Curzon Line" (1949), and "The Ukrainian Rite Catholic Church at he Ecumenical Council 1962-1965" (1967). He helped to resettle Ukrainian DPs after WWII and was with the Catholic Relief Service (NCWC) from 1948 until 1957. In 1968, Dushnyck was a delegate to the International Conference on Human Rights in Teheran.
