Abstract: Karvonen composed numerous works for organ, piano, choir, band, orchestra, chamber groups, solo voice, and solo instruments, the sheet music for which comprises the majority of the collection. Included are also materials containing biographical information, correspondence, research notes, and concert programs.

Collection acquired from Hilja Karvonen of Mankato, Minnesota in 1994.


Karvonen (1917-1991) was professor of music, church organist, and choir director in several states. He was emeritus professor of music at Mankato State University in Minnesota, having taught theory, composition, piano, and organ there from 1964 until his retirement in 1976.

Born on October 6, 1917 in Mass, Michigan, attended high school in Hancock (graduated in 1935). Studied st Suomi College in Hancock 1935-1937, then University of Minnesota (1944-45), earned B.A. in Music - Composition, minor in Philosophy. Continued at University of Michigan and Iowa, earning his PhD in Music composition there in 1960. Taught at University of North Dakota in Grand Forks (1945-1948), at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota (1948-1952), then served as Education Secretary at the Lutheran Mission of Northern Tanganyika in Tanzania from 1952 to 1957. Visiting instructor at Western Illinois University in Macomb (1957-1958), then worked as organist and choirmaster at Irving park Lutheran Church in Chicago (1958-59). From 1960 to 1962 Associate Professor at Sul Boss State University in Alpine, Texas. Two years at Carthage College in Illinois (1962-1964) before becoming Associate Professor at Mankato State University in 1964 until his retirement.
