Collection donated to the IHRC by Trudy Whyte in 1994 and 2007. It was processed by DaN and Mia Overly in 2006-2010.
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Stella Mucha Mickritz (b.Sep. 24, 1899), a native of Oak Creek Township near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, went to Poland immediately after World War I with the Polish Grey Samaritans, a nursing unit assembled under the auspices of the YWCA and the American Relief Administration’s European Children’s Fund. Upon her return, she had formal training as a nurse and also in the social sciences, at various institutions including the American International Academy in Springfield, MA, and the University of Chicago where she received her Ph.B. degree in social sciences in 1932. Later she pursued her carreer in a number of health care institutions in Wisconsin, Illinois, New York and Indiana.
DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION
Papers (1919-1983, bulk 1919-1963), consisting of correspondence, photographs, school records, news clippings, reports, and published materials documenting Mickritz’s career as a nurse, especially her service with the Polish Grey Samaritans. The majority of materials are bound in two scrapbooks, individual documents are encased in plastic sleeves. Several items from the collection have been digitized and the images are available following the links below.
