|Abstract:||Records (1895-1976) of the National Slovak Society include correspondence, financial and legal records, minutes, and insurance claim records. Correspondence includes that of officers with local lodges, and of the Young Folks' Circle with headquarters. Convention records (1937-1974) consist of reports, minutes, correspondence, delegates' lists, campaign literature, revised copies of by-laws, and the Society's constitutions. Also included are records of the Supreme Assembly and Executive Committee (1934-1959), official referendum ballots from individual assemblies concerning district dues, the office of Supreme Treasurer (1963), and the Office of President (1954), pledge documents of elected officers (1913, 1916), and a scrapbook of the Young Folk's Circle (1916-1917), and lists of 810 local assemblies and circles. The collections includes a financial ledger from the Monangah, WV local.|

Collection acquired from the National Slovak Society of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1971-1978. It was inventoried by Maurycy Czerwonka in April 1979.
A fraternal organization, the National Slovak Society was founded in 1890 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is the oldest Slovak society in the United States, and has over 450 lodges. Its first officers were Peter V. Rovnianek, Rev. Louis Novomesky, and Anton S. Ambrose. In 1913, at the Society's 11th Convention, a resolution was adopted providing for the Young Folk's Circle. The Society publishes its official organ, the bi-weekly newspaper National News (Narodne Noviny) and the annual, Narodny Kalendar.
Legal records in Boxes 151-153 restricted. Please note also that Boxes 15-146 and 184-342 (Insurance records) are located in an off-site storage facility. At least a two-week notice is needed to ensure retrieval of these materials, and only a limited number of boxes may be retrieved at a time.
