Dates: ca. 1960-1998
Abstract: Papers include personal materials as well as those created during his years of work at the IHRC. Personal materials include family letters; photographs; an oral history of his mother, Laura; financial records; personal planners and calendars; academic papers and coursework; unpublished writings; and miscellaneous personal papers. Work-related materials include vast correspondence with researchers, clippings, subject files, materials pertaining to classes he taught, translations, presentations, and paperwork from various Finnish-related projects at the IHRC, where he worked from 1975 until his death.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Riippa (1944-1998) was born in Helsinki, Finland, but immigrated to the U.S. with his parents and lived in Astoria, OR, New York Mills, MN, and St. Paul, MN. He was a teacher, translator, editor, researcher, and author whose specialty was Finnish Americans. He was the curatorial assistant and specialist with the Finnish American collection at the IHRC.
